I couldn’t sleep the other night, & this picture idea occurred to me. I imagined a person burdened under the weight of something in their life. The person on the left of my picture illustrates such a person, bent over by the weight of their burden. The person had got so used to the burden being there that they didn’t really think anything of it. It hadn’t occurred to them that they might be able to escape from under their burden.
What is the burden? In my picture it is represented by a large slab of rock, pressing down on the figure, causing them to bend over under it’s weight… but what is it? Well, it could be anything that is a negative influence on a person’s life. I imagine that each person could be under the burden of a different thing. Some people are addicted to a substance (like alcohol for instance), that would certainly manifest itself as a burden. Some people might be constantly seeking the approval of others, which could seem like a burden to them. Similarly other people might be under the burden of low self-esteem, or addicted to cigarettes, or feel inadequate in some way. Almost any attitude or activity could become a burden, if it “takes over” someone’s life, “pressing down” on them.
A burden acting on a person’s life can have been influencing them for a very long time, almost the whole of their life. Things like low self-esteem or similar, negative emotions & attitudes can start very early in someone’s life, & last (if left uncorrected) for the entire length of someone’s life. It might be that a person has got so used to feeling &/or thinking in a certain way, that they just live with it, saying to themselves “this is the best I can be, I just have to live with this”.
In my picture I have drawn the same figure on the right. They have realised that they have been living under some kind of burden for a long time, but have now seen that they can get out from under their burden. Rather than accepting that their burden is there for life, they have realised that they can walk to the edge of the rock sheet, & get out from under it, leaving their burden behind, &, at last, stand up straight… what a relief that must be! The figure on the right has their arms upraised in thankfulness for finally leaving their burden behind.
For me, I believe it can sometimes take a word from God to inform us that we can escape from under the burden we have been living under. Jesus said that we can have life & live it to the full (see John 10:10). I take this to mean that we can escape our burdens & live a life without them hindering us any longer, which is a very hopeful thought indeed!
Below are lots of Bible quotes about living life to the full.
