Nehemiah 2:13b (ANIV)
13b [By night I went out through the Valley Gate] …towards the Jackal Well and the Dung Gate, examining the walls of Jerusalem, which had been broken down, and its gates, which had been destroyed by fire.
DRAWING NOTES:
TIME OF DAY:
Verse 12 tells us Nehemiah went out at night.
LIGHTING NOTES:
There are two sources of light in this scene. The first is the full moon (unseen, to the right of the viewer) which gives a cool, blue hue to the landscape. The second is a warm, yellow/orange light coming from the two torches Nehemiah’s companions are carrying.
CHARACTERS PRESENT:
Nehemiah is riding his donkey down the slope from the remains of the Valley gate, towards the Hinnom valley, on the western side of the Kerusalem. Behind him are his two un-named companions.
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
The colours used in this scene are the same as in the previous picture. I thought an aerial view, looking down into the Hinnom valley from above would help viewers orient themselves with the route Nehemiah took when examining the broken down walls of Jerusalem during his night time excursion.
Nehemah’s party is just passing through the broken and burned wooden gates, which is all that remain of the Valley gate.
Here’s the scene without the figures or donkey included.

Here’s the rough pencil sketch I drew for this scene.

You can see that I intended to have another companion with a torch, walking in front of Nehemiah and his donkey, but decided not to include him in the final version.
