Matthew 5:1 (ANIV)
1 Now when he [Jesus] saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them, saying…
DRAWING NOTES:
TIME OF DAY:
I’ve set the scene in the late morning.
LIGHTING NOTES:
The sun is high in the sky, on the left of the scene.
CHARACTERS PRESENT:
Jesus, sitting on the rocks, with his 12 disciples (see Mark 3:16-19 for list of the names of the 12 disciples) plus Mary Magdalene & Salome, the wife of Zebedee & mother of James & John (2 of Jesus’ disciples.)
You can see a large crowd of people behind the disciples.
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
Matthew chapters 05:01–08:01 is called “the Sermon on the Mount” because Jesus gave it on a hillside near Capernaum, which was a city on the north coast of the Sea of Galilee (Lake Kinneret.) This sermon probably covered several days of preaching, if not more & the content was probably repeated (at least in part) by Jesus many times, as the message contained in the sermon is central to the gospel message.
Geology
A geological map of the area shows the whole region to be Basalt, which is the commonest type of solidified lava. It is a heavy dark grey to black fine-grained (due to rapid cooling of the lava) igneous rock that is composed chiefly of plagioclase feldspar and pyroxene.
I have coloured the rocks dark grey in my cartoon illustration, in keeping with the underlying Basalt geology of the area.
Where is Capernaum?
After Jesus’ left Nazareth (see Matthew 4:13-16 & Luke 4:16-31) he went to live in the city of Capernaum. Matthew 4:13 tells us that the city stood on the (western) shore of the Sea of Galilee. Capernaum was the scene of many of Jesus miracles (see Matthew 8:5, 14, 15; Matthew 9:2-6, 10-17; Matthew 15:1-20; Mark 1:32-34.)
The exact site is debated, there being two possibilities:
1) Capernaum has been identified with Tell Hum, which is about two miles south-west of where the Jordan flows into the Sea of Galilee.
2) Other scholars have conjectured that the ruins of Capernaum are to be found at Khan Minyeh, about three miles further to the south on the lake’s shore.
The apparent arrogance & unbelief of the inhabitants of Capernaum (after the many miracles of Jesus & all that he taught), brought down upon them a heavy denunciation of judgement. Matthew 11:23-24 (ANIV) records Jesus words against the city, “And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths (Hades, Hell). If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom (destroyed in Genesis 19), it would have remained to this day. But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”
I drew this cartoon for someone from my church, who recently (Feb-March 2011) went out to South East Asia on a mission trip. They used this cartoon as part of their presentation in a conference. Cartoons can help to bridge the gap between cultures & help to over language barriers as well!
