Matthew 2:14-15 (NLT)
14 That night Joseph left for Egypt with the child and Mary, his mother, 15 and they stayed there until Herod’s death. This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: “I called my Son out of Egypt.” [1]

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:There are two versions of this scene:
01) (Previous page) Matthew 02 – The Nativity SET 02 – Scene 12 – Escape to Egypt (Baby version). This version shows Jesus as a baby, strapped closely to Mary his mother as they prepare to journey to Egypt.

02) (This page) Matthew 02 – The Nativity SET 02 – Scene 12 – Escape to Egypt (Toddler version). This version shows Jesus as a toddler of approximately 2 years old, held in his mother’s arms on the back of their donkey.

This picture was requested by a customer, who wanted Jesus depicted as a 2 year old.

This scene shows Joseph leading Mary & Jesus (riding on a donkey) away from the town of Bethlehem, after earlier receiving a warning in a dream from an angel of the Lord. I have drawn Joseph & Mary with expressions of fear & sadness, as they hurriedly leave Bethlehem for an uncertain future in Egypt. But I have drawn the little face of Jesus with an expression of joy & wonder. To his infant self the journey would most probably have felt like a great adventure, hence his facial expression.

The colours for Mary, Joseph & Jesus have come from previous scenes in this set.

The background is taken from a previous scene: Matthew 02 – The Nativity SET 02 – Scene 10 – Wise men return home (Baby version). I have adapted the colouring to reflect the night time departure of Joseph, Mary & Jesus. Notice there is a dark storm approaching from the north (which is towards Jerusalem), this is a visual personification of the threat posed by king Herod in that city.
