Luke 16:22-23 (NLT)
[Jesus said] 22 “Finally, the poor man died and was carried by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and his soul went to the place of the dead. There, in torment, he saw Abraham in the far distance with Lazarus at his side.”

DRAWING NOTES:

TIME OF DAY:
Unspecified.

LIGHTING NOTES:
The bright light from heaven provides top lighting in this scene, casting shadows below the figures.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:
The soul/spirit of Lazarus, between 2 angels.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
There are 2 versions of this scene:
1) The Colour version
2) The Blue version (see next Bible Cartoon)
The Blue version strongly contrasts the yellows & gold hues of the angels & Lazarus, without the much darker purple blue background hues below them. The background is simple in design to representing the “falling away” of earthly cares & concerns.

I really enjoyed drawing & colouring up this scene. It has a simple 2 colour palette, using hues of gold, yellow, white & orange in the heaven-bound figures, whilst the background is composed of blues, range from pale to dark hues.

Notice the heavenly light rays that radiate out & down on the angels & Lazarus figures.

Notice also the figure of Lazarus’ body in the bottom right corner, still outside the Rich man’s gate. You may just be able to make out his arm around one of the dogs from the previous scene. The head of Lazarus’ body has lolled to one side, which is how I show he has physically died. Notice also that the other dog has its head back & is howling! I made this part of the scene sombre in terms of it’s colours, especially compared to the brighter yellow, gold & white of the heave-bound figures.

What price art? a personal story!
It can be costly, if you’re not careful! Yesterday (02/July/2014) I fell off a chair in pursuit of it!

So there I was drawing the scene above & I realised I needed some photo’ reference for the figures’ feet, as they fly up towards heaven, so I decided to stand on a chair & photograph my own feet… so far so good.

I stood on the very edge of the chair, so that my feet look like they are unsupported… but then the chair slipped away from under me (because I was SO FAR over on it’s edge) & I ended up in a heap on the floor… so far NOT so good! I broke the chair, but mercifully I didn’t brake any bones! Thank you Lord for keeping me safe!

The photo’ didn’t come out either. So I simply lifted each foot & photographed each one… no need to risk life & limb on a chair… there’s a valuable life lesson!
