John 2:23-25 (ANIV)
23 Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many people saw the miraculous signs he was doing and believed in his name. [2] 24 But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all men. 25 He did not need man’s testimony about man, for he knew what was in a man.
[2]
Or, and believed in him.
DRAWING NOTES:
TIME OF DAY:
Not specified in the Bible narrative. I have set this scene in the mid morning, moments after the previous scene.
LIGHTING NOTES:
The sun (in a cloudy sky) illuminates this scene, from the East (right), casting shadows to the left of figures & objects.
CHARACTERS PRESENT:
Jesus (in his usual blue outer robe), surrounded by various Jewish & Gentile people (i.e. Greeks & people from other nations).
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
This picture shows Jesus walking away from various people in Jerusalem. The people (young & old alike) have expressions of delight, admiration, etc, as they look at Jesus. We know from verse 23 that “many people saw the miraculous signs he was doing and believed in his name”. However, verses 24-25 inform us that Jesus knew what people’s changeable attitudes & inner motivations are really like, so that he did not entrust himself to these people. Probably some of the very people who admired Jesus & believed in him at this point, rejected & ridiculed him once he was crucified.
Here is the scene without the figures in the foreground.

Notice that this scene is not in the courtyard of the temple, but is in some other, unspecified part of the city of Jerusalem. The defensive walls can be seen in the background.
Here is the original pencil sketch I drew to design this scene.
