John 2:16 (ANIV)
To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father’s house into a market!”
DRAWING NOTES:
TIME OF DAY:
Not specified in the Bible narrative. I have set this scene in the mid morning, moments after the previous scene.
LIGHTING NOTES:
The sun (in a cloudy sky) illuminates this scene, from the East (right), casting shadows to the left of figures & objects.
CHARACTERS PRESENT:
Jesus (in blue outer robe & pale head scarf) is in the centre of the picture. Various dove sellers surround him.
doves escaping into the air.
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
Jesus is confronting the sellers of doves in this picture. He is tipping over the bird cages & inadvertently releasing the birds, much to the surprise (& probable annoyance) of the dove sellers!
I decided to keep the background very simple for this scene, as there is a lot of activity/movement in the foreground, & a detailed background would distract from the “action” in the picture. The colours used for the background are taken from the previous scenes (pale pavement colour & blue sky) so as to connect this picture with previous scenes in this story.
The doves I have illustrated are Streptopelia risoria (aka Barbary doves, ringneck doves), which carry a mutation that makes them completely white in colour.
Here is the original pencil sketch I drew to design this scene.
