Genesis 41:9-16 (NLT)
9 Finally, the king’s chief cup-bearer spoke up. “Today I have been reminded of my failure,” he told Pharaoh. 10 “Some time ago, you were angry with the chief baker and me, and you imprisoned us in the palace of the captain of the guard. 11 One night the chief baker and I each had a dream, and each dream had its own meaning. 12 There was a young Hebrew man with us in the prison who was a slave of the captain of the guard. We told him our dreams, and he told us what each of our dreams meant. 13 And everything happened just as he had predicted. I was restored to my position as cup-bearer, and the chief baker was executed and impaled on a pole.”
DRAWING NOTES:
TIME OF DAY:
Morning.
LIGHTING NOTES:
The main source of light that illuminates this scene is the fire urn to the left, which casts shadows to the right and below figures and objects.
CHARACTERS PRESENT:
From left to right: Pharaoh (king of Egypt), the chief cup-bearer, one of the wise men/magicians.
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
This scene shows the chief cup-bearer on his knees, confessing his failure to Pharaoh. He remembers the “young Hebrew man” (Joseph; verse 12) and his ability to interpret dreams. This recollection is what brings Joseph out of prison, before Pharaoh, and thereafter gets Joseph promoted to second-in-command of all Egypt (see following scenes).
The background shows a wide, woven tapestry, hanging on a wall. I found references to the symbols used in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics on the internet, and have used these to design the tapestry. I drew this tapestry to link with the one in the following scene, so both pictures relate strongly to each other.
I borrowed the fire urn from the following scene (Genesis 41 – Pharaoh’s dreams – Scene 05 – Joseph interprets Pharaoh’s dreams), which I drew in January 2017, about 7.5 years previously! Notice that I have included the same mouse, peeking out from below the fire urn that appears in Scene 05.

41:16,25,28,32 GOD, Sovereignty (1.115B)
In God’s sovereignty over all of life, He has multiple ways of making Himself known to us. In Pharaoh’s case, God chose to speak to him through his dreams, which were later interpreted by Joseph. On other occasions God speaks via a faithful prophet or preacher, the reading of a written message, the strong feelings within our hearts, or through dreams. It should be noted though that not all spoken/written messages are from God, & nor are all dreams from Him either.
