Genesis 39:21-23 (NLT)
21 But the Lord was with Joseph in the prison and showed him his faithful love. And the Lord made Joseph a favourite with the prison warden. 22 Before long, the warden put Joseph in charge of all the other prisoners and over everything that happened in the prison. 23 The warden had no more worries, because Joseph took care of everything. The Lord was with him and caused everything he did to succeed.
DRAWING NOTES:
TIME OF DAY:
Unspecified in the Bible narrative. Day time.
LIGHTING NOTES:
Sunlight is coming in through the barred window, illuminating the scene.
CHARACTERS PRESENT:
From left to right: The prison warden, Joseph, two prisoners.
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
This scene shows the prison warden leaning back in a chair, with his hands behind his head. I deliberately wanted to show the warden in this relaxed pose, as it is reminiscent of Potiphur’s pose in the previous scene: Genesis 39 – Joseph in Potiphar’s house – Scene 01 – Joseph succeeds. In both pictures these men are trouble free, as the Lord God enables Joseph to cater to their every need. Unlike Potiphar (in his opulent house), the prison warden has to make do with a wooden chair leaning against the prison wall & an old wooden box to rest his feet on! Nevertheless, the warden is much better off than the prisoners under his “care”!
Joseph is handing out bread to his fellow prisoners from a wooden box. Notice the rats scurrying round on the floor!
In the background picture (see below) you can see that three steps lead down into another, lower level of the Egyptian prison, with stout wood & bronze-bound doors.
Here’s the scene without the figures in the foreground.
