Genesis 37:36 (NLT)
Meanwhile, the Midianite traders [1] arrived in Egypt, where they sold Joseph to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. Potiphar was captain of the palace guard.

Hebrew, Medanites, a variant spelling of Midianites; compare 37:28.
DRAWING NOTES:
TIME OF DAY:
Not specified in Bible narrative. I have set this scene in the mid afternoon.
LIGHTING NOTES:
The sun (unseen, high in the sky on the right) illuminates this scene, casting shadows to the left of figures & objects.
CHARACTERS PRESENT:
Joseph is rope bound & standing on a wooden podium next to one of the Ishmaelite/Midianite traders, in an Egyptian slave market. Various people are bidding to buy Joseph. Potiphur (captain of the palace guard) is the man on the right holding up a dark bag of money; he is agreeing to buy Joseph from the Ishmaelite/Midianite trader.
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
This scene is set in an unnamed Egypt town/city. I researched ancient Egyptian architecture so as to make the location visually different from Israelite settings. I also researched ancient Egyptian costume to make the people look visually different from the other races mentioned in the Bible.
Here is this scene without the figures in the foreground.

When did Joseph go toi Egypt, & who ruled the country at that time in history?
I found a useful article that sheds some light on these questions on the internet, here are some of its arguments:
“Most scholars think Joseph lived in Egypt between 2000 and 1600 B.C. The historical period known as the “Middle Kingdom” lasts from 2000 to 1786 B.C. which was one of Egypt’s greatest [most influential] times.
There are 8 Pharaohs during this time – comprising Egypt’s 12th Dynasty.
Joseph might have gone to Egypt during the reign of Sesostris II (1894-1878 B.C). He most likely began his career under Sesostris III (1878-1841 B.C). Joseph lived in Egypt for 71 years, therefore (according to these dates) Joseph dies in approximately 1805 B.C., under the reign of Amenemhet III (1841-1797 B.C).”
The rest of the article is interesting & well worth a read.
