Genesis 37:9-11 (NLT)
9 Soon Joseph had another dream, and again he told his brothers about it. “Listen, I have had another dream,” he said. “The sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed low before me!”
10 This time he told the dream to his father as well as to his brothers, but his father scolded him. “What kind of dream is that?” he asked. “Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow to the ground before you?” 11 But while his brothers were jealous of Joseph, his father wondered what the dreams meant.
DRAWING NOTES:
TIME OF DAY:
Although the dreams took place at night, I imagine Joseph told his father and brothers about them in the morning, so I’ve set this scene at that time.
LIGHTING NOTES:
This scene is set outside, with weak sunlight coming from above & to the left, casting shadows to the right of figures & objects.
CHARACTERS PRESENT:
From left to right: Joseph, Jacob/Israel (these people’s father), Naphtali, Zebulun, Simion & Levi.
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
This scene shows Joseph telling his father Jacob/Israel & four of his 11 brothers about his second dream. The sun represents his father Jacob/Israel, the moon represents Joseph’s mother Rachel, & the elev stars represent his brothers. All bow down to Joseph in his dream.
As I stated in the previous cartoon’s description, for some reason Joseph didn’t seem to understand that telling his brothers about his dreams would turn them against him. Perhaps he was just immature, & didn’t appreciate the negative effect his revelation would have on his siblings. Although Jacob/Israel scolds Joseph, he started to wonder what the dreams might mean. Perhaps Jacob/Israel was more open to dreams having a meaning, since he himself encountered the Lord God in a dream, at Bethel (see Genesis 28:10-22). We aren’t told what Rachel’s reaction to Joseph’s dreams were.
The colours for the various characters in this scene were established in earlier cartoons, principally Genesis 37 – Joseph’s Dreams – Scene 02 – The coat of many colour.
