Bible Reference & Cartoon Description

Genesis 3:22-23 (NLT)
22 Then the Lord God said, “Look, the human beings [1] have become like us, knowing both good and evil. What if they reach out, take fruit from the tree of life, and eat it? Then they will live forever!” 23 So the Lord God banished them from the Garden of Eden, and he sent Adam out to cultivate the ground from which he had been made.

[1]
Or, man; Hebrew reads ha-adam.

DRAWING NOTES:

TIME OF DAY:
The Bible doesn’t tell us when this event took place.

LIGHTING NOTES:
There is general, diffused lighting in this scene, with a glow around the Lord God (the figure in gold), also adding light into the picture.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:
The Lord God pointing away from the Garden of Eden. Adam & Eve

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
This Bible Cartoon was originally designed for one of my “Bad Day” mugs. I have extended it & added more detail to make it suitable for inclusion in the Bible Cartoon collection.

The Lord God (in gold with a heavenly glow about him) is pointing away from the Garden of Eden, expelling Adam & Eve from it. Notice their tears! Notice also that they are now dressed in animal skin clothes (held together with wooden toggles!) you can just make out the fur texture in the cartoon. The Lord God’s provision of animals skins for clothes (see verse 21) is the very first recorded incident of death in the Holy Bible. God Himself had to kill animals to provide their skins as clothing for the man & woman.

I have added a graduated colour background, which starts on the left with a verdant, lively green & progresses to a more drab, sandy brown on the right. This is my way of showing the introduction of hardship, toil, & ultimately death into the natural world. Notice also the introduction of a thistle at Adam’s feet, again this indicates the difficulties he & Eve will face. It is a reference to verse 18, “It [the ground] will grow thorns and thistles for you, though you will eat of its grains.”

Bible Doctrine Notes
3:20-24 HUMANITY, Human nature (2.42A)

The names God gave Adam and Eve reflect their different nature from the rest of life. Adam literally means “man” or “mankind” while Eve means “life”. Sin has marred the image of God within themselves, but human nature remains in that we are living people. Though our behaviour may be beastly or demonic, we are still human, which makes us uniquely and completely different from either animals or demons.
