Mark 14 - Jesus’ declaration cartoon

Posted 19 Mar 2010

I’ve just uploaded the next cartoon in the Mark 14 sequence, this is scene 06 – Declaration, which depicts the reaction of the crowd & the Sanhedrin, to Jesus’ declaration of divinity. As Mark’s gospel relates the scene:
‘Then the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the blessed God?”
Jesus said, “I am, and you will see me, the Son of Man, sitting at God’s right hand in the place of power and coming back on the clouds of heaven.” ‘
After that statement the crowd go wild & start jeering, spitting & hitting Jesus, evan as he is led away.

As I stated in the background notes for this cartoon, I found the finished scene very disturbing. It’s one thing to read the account in the Holy Bible, but to actually draw it is something else. I find it unsettling because it shows human nature at its worst: a baying crowd of blood-thirsty people, venting their collective fury on Jesus. They are like a pack of wild dogs & the presence of 2 women who are equally engaged in the assault on Jesus makes the scene all the more tragic. Their gleeful, vengeful faces remind me of Harpies!
